Transport Infrastructure Railway Transport

In 2008 the Georgian railway carried:

  • 21.2 million tons of cargo
  • 10.0 million tons of crude oil and oil products
  • 3.4 million passengers

Infrastructure Projects:

  • Construction of NewRailway Line-Baku-Tbilisi-Kars connecting Caucasus rolling stocks to Europe Railway
  • Rehabilitation of Bridges on the Main Line
  • Rehabilitation of wagons and vehicles

Capacity Improvement Facilitation:

  • Organization of Direct International Rail-Ferry Connection between Poti/Batumi (Georgia) and Kerch (Ukraine) Sea ports

Road Transport

  • 27.8 million tons of cargo
  • 301.4 million passengers

InfrastructureProjects:

Modernization of the East-West Highway of Georgiain line with international standards ensuring high safety level

Rehabilitation of more then 400 km of Regional roads (WBloan)

Capacity Improvement Facilitation:

Signing of intergovernmental Agreement with the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Estonia, Finland, Moldova and Tajikistan on International Road Transport

Road Safety Policy:

  • “Georgian National Road Safety Strategy” (adopted)
  • Road Safety Improvement Action Plan (preparing)

Civil Aviation

In 2008, international airports of Georgia served:

  • 0.804 million passengers.

InfrastructureProjects:

  • Two new International Airports- Tbilisi and Batumi (constructed)
  • new passenger terminals
  • modern equipments (ICAOstandards)

Capacity Improvement Facilitation:

International Agreement:

  • European Common Aviation Agreement-promoting free competition and liberalization air traffic, (negotiation started)
  • Agreements on Air Transport with - Republic of Armenia; Swiss Confederation (signed)
  • Air Services Agreements with - the United Arab Emirates, China, UKand Ukraine (planned to sign)

Integration in the European air navigation system-membership in EUROCONTROL

Maritime Transport

18.5 million tons of cargo was processed at the sea ports in 2008 :

  • Poti Sea Port – 8.0 million tons
  • Batumi Sea Port – 8.7 million tons
  • Kulevi Sea Port (constructed) – 1.3 million tons
  • Supsa Seaport – 0.6 million tons

Poti Seaport

Batumi Seaport

  • Totally private–“Kazmunaigaz”
  • containert ransportation (started)

Kulevi Seaport

  • Private management - SOCAR
  • total capacity - 4 million tons (operating)

Capacity Improvement Facilitation:

Developing existing and new maritime ferry connections between the Black Sea ports of Georgia and other countries

Transport Department

Basic objectives of Transport Department of the Ministry of Economic Development:

  • Work out basic directions of state policy in the transport field, as well as coordination and control of set state policy realization;
  • Cooperation with international organizations and structures. Participation in the process of investment policy formation in transport sector in order to support attraction of investment capital, international aid and credits;
  • Participation in work out and realization of interdepartmental activities together with other ministries and bodies with the aim of transit potential development of the country and decision of issues referred to the transit function.
  • Work out drafts of international agreements in the field of transport and participation in negotiations;
  • Participation in the work of intergovernmental commissions on economic cooperation and preparation of issues for consideration on sessions of mentioned commissions;
  • Participation in work out of general safety policy in transport sector together with appropriate bodies;
  • Participation, within the limits of its competence, in the processes of legal basis perfection and harmonization with international standards that are in force in the transport sector;
  • Participation in determination of basic directions of branch reforms and institutional order;
  • Facilitation of liberalization processes’ realization in transport sector.

 Transport department cooperates with different governmental bodies in order to fulfill the above-mentioned objectives.

Transport Department consists of Civil Aviation and Aviation Infrastructure Development Division, Maritime Transport and Port Infrastructure Development Division, Inland Transport and Infrastructure Development Division and Division on Transport-Transit Systems Development.
